In the IA BAIA and BFA programs, the concentration is interdisciplinary, including: the study of graphic design, typography (within the design of complex visuals such as maps, charts, diagrams, and navigational systems—requires a tight focus on verbal content, typographic details, aesthetic consistency, how the communication will be used, and who its audience will be), history, aesthetics, process, technology, project management, Information Architecture, usability testing, materials, and marketing. The BFA program was in Graphic Design; emphasis: Geschichte der Schule für Gestaltung Basel—California College of the Arts (CCA). The CCA is proud to be designated by Adobe Systems Incorporated as a Partners by Design School. My subject matter focus in this program was Information Architecture & Design, Navigational Systems, and Project Management. Because of an extended education and extra Diploma from Heald Business College, my IA BAIA degree is equivalent to the BSIT degree. My IA BAIA degree is a highly specialized undergraduate degree in Information Architecture, Navigational Systems, Project Management (see below information about degrees, coursework, and completion of Information Architect internships). Relevant Information Architect, Project Management Courses “The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology (BSIT) is a management-oriented technical curricula built upon a program of studies drawn from the Departments of Design and Industry, Information Systems and Business Analysis, Mathematics, and Management. The Bachelor of Science prepares students for technical leadership responsibilities with a broad variety for industries including manufacturing, communication, transportation, and utility services. Graduates in the field of industrial technology are prepared to function as technical managers in industry. Preparation in the BSIT requires the student to choose an emphasis in product development and manufacturing technology, graphic communication technology, or electronics technology (source: DAI, SFSU).” The Information Architecture and Graphic Design concentration prepares architect-designers for changes within the Information Architecture industry, better aligning designers with contemporary Information Architecture methods, Information Architecture processes, best practices in Information Architecture, usability testing, project management, Information Architecture concepts, and Information Architecture nomenclature. Accomplishing my IA BAIA degree, I specialized in Information Architecture and therefore have an undergraduate degree (double major) in Information Architecture and Graphic Design. Design Research, 2. Concept Generation, 3. User Scenarios, 4. Wire Frame Mockups, 5. Prototyping, 6. Usability Testing, 7. Implementation, and 8. System Testing. When an Information Architect takes a systematic approach using The IA Model, research revealed that this method was more effective. Heuristic Evaluations Understanding why usability testing is necessary and how to do it. In terms of doing heuristic evaluations and how to design usability tests for effective data collection, this includes doing: heuristic evaluations, heuristic estimations, cognitive walkthroughs, pluralistic walkthroughs, feature inspections, consistency inspections, standards inspections, and formal usability inspections. Using The IA Model The Information Architect does research and brainstorming to come up with high-level concepts. It is necessary to do this for an Information Architecture Design Plan Report. Completing a competitive analysis and writing a report, documents requirements for Websites. This helps a client to define their end users and their business plans. Figuring out what the patterns will be, this provides clarity with regard to Information Architecture. Enabling end users to stay found and wayfind on Websites, then implementing clear navigational systems. Building in affordances for end users, so they can navigate. Designing clear interfaces and for consistency in interface designs, this provides clarity for end users. Information Architecture, user-centered design, and usability testing improves an end user’s performance. The IA Model assists Information Architects to design high-quality Websites. Steven Heitman’s Information Architect Required Review For Steven Heitman, Information Architect “Steven has made a serious, thorough study of Information Architecture, experience design, and usability. He applies his past experience in related fields intelligently and has worked hard to develop his expertise in his chosen field. As Steven’s mentor through the IA Institute, I have been impressed by his dedication and tireless efforts to improve and grow as a designer of user experiences.” Reviewed by Mr. Christian Crumlish Director of Technology The Information Architecture Institute July 2008 top | to portfolio | how to use Website Copyright ©2007-2012 All rights reserved Last updated: March 1, 2010 Steven Heitman IA Design & Usability Information Architect User Experience Designer Project Manager |
